Crime drops in Umzumbe

The community's proactive initiative has certainly paid off.

UMZUMBE village’s crime stats released after the Christmas holidays are extremely encouraging.

Grant Wood, vice-chairman of the Umzumbe Beach Ratepayers’ Association (UBRA), said he was pleased to give the community positive feedback.

This success comes after the community recently pooled its resources so that eight cameras could be erected in and around Umzumbe.

Further, the Umzumbe Security Initiative had three cameras installed by Gladiator Security Services, monitored 24/7.

Mr Wood said that only three incidents were reported during the recent festive period.

On one occasion, suspected thieves were noticed on camera.

Mr Wood said that although cellphones were taken and there were no arrests, Gladiator Security‘s response, including a helicopter pursuit was excellent.

A possible attempted robbery was thwarted when a resident chased off his attacker near the hotel.

Then lastly, robbers bypassed the gate motor and drove their car into a complex, making off with a TV on December 10.

Mr Wood said UBRA was looking at a new batch of cameras that will cover the north and south entrances to the village and will also erect a pan, zoom and tilt camera at the superette to cover the railway line, Station Road and ‘The Rock’.

He thanked everyone for their participation in the initiative.

“We seem to be winning hands down and also urge those of you who have not become involved, to please do so,” he added.
