Update: Bail denied Ella’s murder accused

Marius Nagel is expected to appear in the Ramsgate High Court early this week.

BAIL was last Friday denied to Marius Nagel by Magistrate Bryan Munilall in the Port Shepstone Regional Court.

Nagel is facing three charges. An attempted murder charge for an incident in a Southport pub on October 24, and then murder and rape of Elsie Potgieter.

Magistrate Munilall said the interests of justice far outweighed the interests of Nagel, adding he found Nagel to have nothing exceptional about his personal circumstances.

State prosecutor Rubeun Judnarain said the case doesn’t only depend the evidence of DNA, but other circumstantial evidence which can prove beyond doubt Nagel committed the offence. “The state is ready for trial,” said Mr Judnarain.

He argued that Nagel was a flight risk, had just been released from prison and had already committed serious offences. “In the interests of justice he should be kept in custody,” he said.

Nagel will appear in the Ramsgate High Court early this week.
