‘Yes’ to pop-up shops

Scottburgh's beachfront should be buzzing and safe for the festive season.

AT  the Exco meeting on Tuesday last week it was unanimously accepted that the two vacant shops in Scottburgh’s beachfront Pavilion be leased out for a short term three month period.

This quick fix will benefit the tourism industry as well as the municipality who will generate income while saving face with the likes of both locals and holidaymakers.

In the proposal which Councillor Edwin Baptie submitted to Exco he said: “The municipality has come under fire from all quarters and to endure another festive season without occupation will do further damage.”

The terms of the lease proposed are:

• Three months commencing December;

• A tariff of five percent of turnover subject with a minimum of R5 000;

• The space to be rented as is;

• Tenant may make superficial improvements;

• Water and electrical supply be made available in its present state.

The plan will be advertised soon and officials will make a lightning decision on who to grant mini-leases to.

It is believed food and beverage outlets will be top priorities and ‘uniqueness’ will be taken into consideration.

Council sees this as an ideal opportunity for innovative locals to make extra cash this festive season.
