Fireworks are legal during Diwali

The community is urged to avoid fireworks with very loud bangs.

FIREWORKS have not been banned during the celebration of Diwali, according to the Port Shepstone Hindu Cultural Federation.

Hindus will observe Diwali on Thursday, October 23.

“This is a democratic country with a constitution which grants us all the right to exercise our culture and religion freely,” said the federation’s Sam Lakhan.

“The South Coast is no different from the rest of South Africa, neither is any ratepayer’s confines. All Hindus living anywhere on our coast are free to enjoy their fireworks as we have in the past. There are no changes to the law.

“We are aware of the ‘notice boards’ that have now been removed from municipal land and placed on private property. These noticeboards are irrelevant to Diwali and only serve the property owner’s personal interests,” said Mr Lakhan.

He requested that the community be responsible and show concerns for all forms of life on earth, and to avoid the very loud bangs. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE ON THE FIREWORKS DEBATE.
