Join the ‘two bag’ craze

Make a difference and join the coast's drive to go green.

IN celebration of the ‘National Clean-up Week’ the public is invited to the launch the ‘two bag recycling system’ for Hibberdene and Umzumbe, at the Hibberdene Spar parking area this Friday (September 19) between 9am and 12pm.

The community is invited to join the Hibiscus Coast Municipality’s (HCM) Mayor Cynthia Mqwebu, and the Hibberdene Business Association for the launch which will be followed by a clean-up campaign throughout the Hibberdene and surrounding areas, including the closing of illegal dumping hotspots.

Siboniso Mdlala of HCM, said that due to the success of the two bag recycling system implemented at Southbroom, Marina Beach and Trafalgar the municipality is in the process of implementation at Hibberdene and Umzumbe.

The ‘two bag initiative’ is an exciting project as it reduces the amount of waste that enters a landfill site.

“The municipality thanks the public for its cooperation which has made a significant impact, yielding 102.6 tons of recyclable waste which has been collected since June 2013,” he said.

Mr Mdlala said HCM had embarked on a door-to-door campaign in these two towns, distributing information leaflets about the separation process.

He explained that the process involves the distribution of clear and black bags, where wet waste will be collected in the black bags, and recyclable waste in the clear bags.

HCM is currently managing six of the seven public depots which produced 222 tons of recyclable waste since 2013.

The public depots are situated at Southbroom, Shelly Beach, Albersville, Umtentweni, Southport, Hibberdene and Port Shepstone (which is managed by Beekman Group).

Beekman Group is in partnership with HCM in terms of the maintenance and/or funding of some public recycling banks, and the support of community awareness campaigns.

Mr Mdlala said these depots are running smoothly with only minor challenges when a small degree of non-recyclable waste is deposited.
