Water wasted in Marburg while Murchison goes thirsty

The water leak has been reported to Ugu, but nothing has been done.

WHILE some parts of the district are without water, litres  are being wasted in Marburg.

Residents of Deepvale Road and Hibiscus Drive in Marburg have had water flowing down their streets and into their yards for the past few months.

Residents claim to have contacted Ugu on numerous occasions, but all they get are reference numbers and no help.

Manila Pakkiri, who owns a house in Deepvale Road, has water flowing into her yard. “This is a terrible way to live. I  called in a plumber to try and fix the problem but he told me  the water was not coming from my pipes, but from the leak,” said Ms Pakkiri. The water has destroyed her yard and caused some of the walls to crack.

Ward councillor Ajith Rajaram says he no longer knows what to do. “It is so sad because you get cases like Murchison where people protest because of no water, yet you have litres and litres of clean water being wasted day and night in Marburg,” he said.

“I have tried to contact Ugu but I never get an answer. It’s unfortunate that it has come to a point when we have to use the media as a way of getting a response from the municipality.”

Ugu spokesman Sipho Khuzwayo said  that a team had been sent out to repair the leak.
