N2 water protests intensify

Ugu mayor, Ntombifikile Gumede is coming under increasing pressure to ensure the community has access to water.

MORE than 1 000 angry protesters have again gathered on the N2 near Murchison in an effort to get access to water.

The protesters blocked the road and set fire to tyres and a water tanker. Police vehicles were also stoned earlier this morning. The situation is described as ‘tense’.

People living in Murchison  say they are frustrated and angry that Ugu has not kept its promise, made a week ago, to deliver water to the area.

Officers from the Public Order Policing (P0P) and Tactical Response Team (TRT) are currently trying to stabilise the situation. Read more on the protests here.
