N2 water protests intensify

Ugu mayor, Ntombifikile Gumede is coming under increasing pressure to ensure the community has access to water.

MORE than 1 000 angry protesters have again gathered on the N2 near Murchison in an effort to get access to water.

The protesters blocked the road and set fire to tyres and a water tanker. Police vehicles were also stoned earlier this morning. The situation is described as ‘tense’.

People living in Murchison  say they are frustrated and angry that Ugu has not kept its promise, made a week ago, to deliver water to the area.

Officers from the Public Order Policing (P0P) and Tactical Response Team (TRT) are currently trying to stabilise the situation. Read more on the protests here.

  1. Yes….Let’s set fire to a water tanker…because THAT is really going to help us!

  2. @ Laura, they do not need water in the tank, they need water in the water pipes to supply their homes like yours. This issue has been going on since December 2013. What would you have done if you didn’t have water supply to your house for more than 6 months? Also, The water in the tanks are dirty, these are humans who pay for water bill like you.

  3. Delver? And this is meant to be from a professional taught how to spell. Shocking!

  4. @Dayna Mostert It is very sad that despite such a serious story, you choose to focus on a typing error.

  5. As much I we appreciate their need for water closing the N2 and threatening staff who want to come to work is not the way to do it. Feel free to block the Mayor and Ugu councilors roads and intimidate and threaten them. Many of us were stranded for days with children not going to school andbusinesses not being able to operate and yet we pay our municipal rates and taxes for which we get absolutely nothing in return.
