Scottburgh residents have decided to stand together and join the battle against Umdoni Municipality’s decision to evict the Wimpy. The #WimpyStay petition, started by AfriForum two weeks ago, has already picked up 2 230 signatures.
Residents have expressed dismay at how hell-bent council has been at muscling out a successful family-run business which has been feeding locals and holidaymakers for 26 years. Adding to the discord are the vacant shops, formerly the Beachcomber and Phat Boys.
Council has made no secret of its intention to include previously disadvantaged business people into the mix, but many are questioning at what cost?
Locals fear that a vacant beachfront pavilion will turn Scottburgh into a ghost town and fall to the mercy of vagrants.
One resident said that he was concerned for all businesses that rely on a council lease. “It all seems so fickle, a wrong look may find you losing your livelihood,” he said.
Another resident expressed dismay at the countless innocent staff who will lose their jobs, for supposed ‘upliftment’.
AfriForum is planning to hand over the petition to the municipality, along with a memorandum outlining the countless problems at the beachfront.
