Pipe repairs: The good, the bad and the ugly

It is hoped everything will be shipshape in time for Easter and Africa Bike Week.

IT appears that not all work done by plumbers working for the Ugu District Municipality goes unnoticed.

The municipality received flak recently after staff repaired burst water pipes but failed to reinstate the area, leaving behind deep trenches and exposed pipes.

Recently, a water pipe burst in Marine Drive, Oslo Beach, which Trevor Podmore noticed on March 22 and duly reported.

Plumbers came out on the same day and completed repairs, with the dug up surface being retarred the following day.

“This was excellent work by the municipality. We often read negative articles in newspapers about these repair works and I wanted to show that there are positive ones too,” said Mr Podmore.

Deborah Naidoo of Glen Road, Marburg said two water pipes burst on March 15 and the same night the problem was repaired.

She was pleasantly surprised that the road surface was repaired to perfection within a few days.

Meanwhile, in other areas massive trenches have been dug up and not repaired.

In Anerley, a massive trench on the corner of Goodlands Road has been left for more than a month.

After the problem was fixed, Ugu workers left behind an enormous hole and have not been back since to restore the area. Water is still running in the large pit.

Residents of Anerley and Marburg are now hoping that the municipality can have all dug up trenches fixed up before the Easter holidays and Africa Bike Week.
