The man responsible for the killing in Umzinto lived in Gcilima near Margate.

A MARGATE man who killed another man in a fight over alcohol at an informal settlement in Umzinto on the night of March 23 last year was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment.

Sibusiso Shabane’s lifeless body was found lying in the Sanathan Informal Settlement. A post-mortem examination revealed that he had been stabbed 18 times in the torso and his right hand had been broken.

Within a matter of days, Detective Constable Tholisizwe Mbutho of the Umzinto SAPS Detective Service tracked down the suspect and arrested him in the Umzinto main street.

Michael Fana Ndlovu (26) of Gcilima, Margate was detained and brought before the Scottburgh Regional Court. He remained in police custody until his conviction and sentence as the investigating officer had successfully opposed his formal application for bail.

It was established during the trial that Shabane and Ndlovu had been drinking together when an argument broke out over alcohol, ending in Ndlovu drawing a dagger and stabbing Shabane. The murder weapon was found in his possession at the time of his arrest.

Captain Siva ‘RP’ Pillay, the Umzinto SAPS Detective Commander, commended Detective Constable Mbutho on the thorough investigation of the case which resulted in the successful conviction and sentencing of the accused.
