HCM employee nabbed with copper cable

The men were charged with possession of stolen property.

AN Hibiscus Coast Municipality employee is one of two men  arrested and charged with possession of stolen copper cable.

Warrant Officer ‘PC’ Naicker and Sergeant Melinda Carter were patrolling  in Albersville on Monday this week when they noticed a metered taxi parked with the boot open.

“There was also a white bakkie parked close by,” said police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

She added the officers noticed the bakkie drive off and they then stopped the metered taxi. The officers asked to search the car and found a box containing copper cable in the boot.

“The driver of the car told police that a man, a passenger in the bakkie, gave the copper wire to him to keep in his  taxi until he finished work later that afternoon,” said Lt-Col Wiid.

The taxi driver (30) and the man (44), who is employed at the Hibiscus Coast Municipality, were charged with possession of stolen property and appeared in the Port Shepstone Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday this week. The men were released on bail and the case was postponed for further investigation.

Hibiscus Coast Municipality was contacted for comment but, at the time of going to press, the Herald had not received a reply.
