Truck driver arrested after fake hijacking

The investigating officer (pictured) suspected something was amiss.

TWO men have been arrested and charged for defeating the ends of justice, as well as for theft and malicious damage to property.

Their arrests come after a truck was supposedly hijacked on the N2 near Mtwalume on Friday, February 21.

Lungisani Ndlela (28) was driving the truck on the N2 freeway near Mtwalume at about 10pm when he said he was ‘pulled over’ by a police vehicle with blue lights.

According to the report Ndlela filled out at the Hibberdene police station, he said he also noticed a black car stopping behind him.

Ndlela then claimed that the police vehicle drove off after which the occupants of the black car hijacked him.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said Ndlela said he was instructed to drive towards Sawoti (near Umzinto), where the hijackers ordered him to stop the truck.

“According to Ndlela, the safe in the truck was opened and cash was taken. Thereafter, the so-called hijackers burnt the truck and fled,” said Lt-Col Wiid.

However, Detective Captain Alson Gumede from Hibberdene suspected something was amiss and began investigating.

He duly arrested Ndlela, the man who claimed he had been hijacked. Further investigation led the detective to Hillcrest where the stolen money was found hidden in a bedroom.

Musanwenkosi Zulu (27) was also arrested. Both men confessed that it had been pre-planned and they were duly charged.

They appeared in Hibberdene Magistrate’s Court last Thursday and the case was postponed. They were released on R1 500 bail each.
