Service delivery under the spotlight

AfriForum has made its presence felt in KwaZulu-Natal.

CIVIL rights organisation, AfriForum, has made its presence felt in KwaZulu-Natal, especially on the South Coast. The organisation has tackled municipalities and government sectors which flout certain local government legislation.

AfriForum has tackled eThekwini Metro, Ugu district, eMadlangeni, Umdoni and the Hibiscus Coast Municipality on issues of poor service delivery.

The organisation has investigated and tested the water quality provided by Ugu and released forensic investigation reports on councillors who owe municipalities for rates and service.

Chris Fourie, AfriForum’s community co-ordinator in KZN, said poor service delivery in the province has forced it to investigate whether the people responsible for service delivery were qualified to provide the services.

“If they are not and have not been given extension to comply with the competency regulations, we will have no choice but to have them removed,” said Mr Fourie.

Recently AfriForum gave the Hibiscus Coast Municipality seven days to supply them with a copy of the National Treasury’s response about requests for an investigation into alleged unqualified managers at the municipality.

AfriForum said nine managers at HCM did not meet the minimum competency levels.

However, HCM spokesman Simon Soboyisa said the municipality has been granted an extension until June 2014 to meet the minimum competency level .
