Lelo helps petrol station’s cats

The petrol attendent has adopted the colony of feral cats.

PETROL attendant Lelo Hem has been saving her tips to help feed homeless cats at the Caltex station in Umtentweni.

Umtentweni resident, Cheryl Bannister-Jones, who uses that garage, stepped in when she realised that Lelo was feeding the cats from her tips.

She, together with Elaine Steabler from Hibiscus Animal Welfare, now help by supplying Lelo with food for the cats.

They urge the community to help Lelo by donating cat food. Cheryl has also helped by getting the cats sterilised.

A friendly Lelo has worked at the petrol station since 1989. She loves her furry friends and cares deeply about their welfare.

When she was on leave recently, three of the cats were run over. The news broke Lelo’s heart.

“I like to look after everything, especially people and cats,” said Lelo. She said the cats also help to keep the snakes and rats away.

“Caring for a feral cat colony provides tremendous benefits to the community and for the cats. It helps to assist people who live nearby to understand and co-exist with the cats.” said Elaine.

She has formed a special bond with the colony of cats who come out the bush when she calls for them.

Cat food can be given to Lelo or Max at the filling station, or contact Elaine at 071 8944018.
