N2 crash leaves two dead

The bus rolled down an embankment and came to rest on its roof.

A TANKER driver and a passenger on board a bus were killed after a head-on collision on the N2 toll road near Umtentweni last Friday at around 10pm. The truck and the bus collided on a bend, resulting in the bus leaving the road, overturning, and rolling down an embankment before coming to rest on its roof. The damage to both vehicles was extensive.

The north bound lane was closed for several hours while the police completed their investigation and the vehicles were recovered. “A further 28 passengers on the bus, all believed to be teachers, were injured,” said Robert McKenzie, KwaZulu-Natal EMS media liaison officer. “Three of them were critically injured while 24 suffered serious injuries. They were taken to Port Shepstone and Murchison hospitals for further care,” said Mr McKenzie.

Local emergency services including emergency medical services, private ambulances, the fire department, SAPS, SAPS search and rescue and the RTI responded to the accident. The paramedics and firemen worked at the bottom of the embankment in the pouring rain, freeing and treating the injured.
