Duiker dies agonising death

More animals are being lost to poachers than is realised.

TWENI residents Alex Skene and Jonny Guy heard the cries of a duiker in distress at about 3am one morning, but when they eventually found the animal, it was too late. The duiker had been caught in a snare and dogs, who also heard the cries, had killed it. “What an agonising and horrific way for the poor animal to die,” said Mr Skene.

Craig Hosken, from Crag’s View Wild Care Centre was invited to Tweni recently to train and assist Tweni Conservancy in locating snares in and around the area. Alex reported that prior to the snare patrol, 14 snares were found and removed, and another four were removed on the day of the patrol.

The conservancy needs additional members, as more animals are being lost to poachers than is realised. Anyone requiring more information or interested in joining is invited to visit the Information Centre that has been set up at JC Licensing in the JTV Centre, next to the post office in Tweni.
