Marburg Primary takes top honours

Pupils displayed great talent at the soccer tournament.

MARBURG Primary beat ten other schools to win the fourth annual Strini Moodley Junior Soccer Tournament at Port Shepstone Senior Primary last Saturday.

The competition was very tough in the group stages with some schools qualifying for the semi-finals on goal difference. Both semi-finals were settled by penalty shootouts. Jai Hind edged out Port Shepstone Primary 4-3 while Marburg Primary defeated RA Engar 4-1.

The final match between Marburg Primary and Jai Hind was really special. Both teams played skilful and entertaining soccer. Marburg’s Imkitha Dlepu opened the scoring to give his team a 1-0 half-time lead. In the second half, Marburg dominated the match. After a fine build-up on the right wing, Imkitha crossed for Thabiso Hlophe to head in an excellent second goal. Njabulo Mpisana scored the third goal to give Marburg a convincing 3-0 win.

Imkitha Dlepu was named man of the match for his outstanding performance.

Ruben Moodley, son of Strini Moodley said the tournament was a great success. “It was amazing to see what talent our pupils on the South Coast have. The schools got better and better as the tournament progressed and the standard of soccer was very high. The excitement shown by the pupils was overwhelming,” he said.

Strini Moodley’s family thanked all sponsors, contributors and well-wishers for making the 2013 tournament an enormous success.
