Held up at gunpoint

No arrests have been made and the stolen vehicle has not yet been recovered.

FIVE armed men stormed the Pennington Superette and Bakery on Thursday evening at closing time, holding the owner and a shop assistant at gunpoint. Owner Miles Adams had closed the shop when an elderly man arrived in the parking area.

Shop assistant Natalie Braun went out to the car and offered to help the customer despite the shop being closed. A maroon Toyota RunX then pulled into the parking area and Mr Adams decided to allow Natalie to assist the three men in this vehicle too. The driver handed her some money and asked for a loaf of bread.

While Mr Adams and Ms Braun were in the store ringing up the sale, the three men from the vehicle and two other men who emerged from the bush stormed into the store with guns, demanding cash and the keys to Mr Adams’s vehicle.

Some of the men took Ms Braun into the office and pushed her around, demanding she open the safe.

After stealing R5 000 worth of cigarettes and R25 000 in cash, the men fled the scene in their RunX and Mr Adams’s silver VW Polo. Video footage of the incident has been handed over to the Scottburgh SAPS. No arrests have been made and the stolen vehicle has not yet been recovered. This is the third time in 15 years that the superette has been the target of armed robbers.
