Sabiha places third in silver division at SA Amateur champs

Sabiha Baucus got off to a flying start, finishing in first place after round one on the famous east course.

UMKOMAAS GOLF CLUB

Congratulations to Sabiha Baucus for her excellent performance at last week’s SA Amateur Strokeplay Championships. A first, historically, this year’s SA Amateurs saw both the men and women play at the same time at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington.

Both east and west courses were set up long and played to the advantage of longer hitters and to those who have a great touch on quick greens.

Sabiha got off to a flying start, finishing in first place after round one on the famous east course. A shift to the west course saw her continue to keep pace with leaders, heading into the final round a couple of shots back.

Young Kamaya Moodliar from Umhlali played steadily throughout the tournament and proved too good to catch, eventually winning by five shots.

Sabiha’s impressive first two rounds saw her win the Best Nett for 36-holes (Day one and two) and finish third overall in the silver (B) division. We are so proud of Sabiha, especially as this was her first experience of the SA Amateur Champs, notorious for having the courses set up long and tough for the gold division.

Weekly Results

The rainy weather last Wednesday meant only a few avid golfers took to the course with Peter Toward taking the top spot with 36 points, followed closely by Evija McKelvey on 35 points.

Saturday’s Bonus Bogey competition was well supported, despite several of the regulars doing industrial league duty at Umdoni. Husband and wife team, Keith and Lesa Vergottini, emerged victorious on +10, followed by Devlyn Fraser and Vic De Klerk on +9. Devlyn was on song as he scooped the jackpot and a 2-club.

Next week sees the first round of the 2020 Alliance League competition and there are still opportunities for individuals and/or teams to enter. Played once per month, prizes are up for grabs monthly, as well as for cumulative winners at the end of the year. English pub night a resounding success

Nearly 80 revellers enjoyed the English pub night held last Friday. By all accounts, a great time was had by all as they enjoyed scrumptious fish and chips and sing-a-longs to classic British favourites. Umkomaas regularly hosts social evenings and visitors are always welcome. The revelry is set to continue with a St Patricks event planned for next month.
