Herald Fishing: Make sure your tackle is up to scratch

The silver tide is working its way up the coast and sardines are making their presence felt wherever they turn up.

Sardine! Sardine! Sardine!

The little silver morsels finally made a showing on the KZN coast.

The silver tide is working its way up the coast and sardines are making their presence felt wherever they turn up.

Action has been happening from Port Edward all the way to Durban beachfront.

With all the focus on sardines and their whereabouts, not much has come in in terms of reports from the rest of the coast.

If you are targeting blacktail, then a 7ft rod is more than adequate. When targeting sharks, you cannot use a scratching stick.

It will only end badly, for you and the fish you hook.

So, fortunately and unfortunately anglers need to have more than one rod to fish our coast.

During this time of year with all the giants of the deep coming within targeting range, you need to significantly up your tackle.

There have been some gigantic sharks and edible fish landed.

Reports of lots of shad being caught all along the South Coast.

Kingfish and garrick are still on the run. Targeting these fish can either be catching on plugs or live bait.

However, there has been some epic couta coming out to guys who put the effort in – geelbek and tuna are also on the bite.

The offshore side of things has been rather quiet of late, with not much reporting happening.

Offshore conditions have not been great and the sea has flipped a few boats that had rushed launches.

Please be safe out there and make sure you study the water before you launch. Tight lines and screaming reels.
