Video: School pupils attack shop

The rampage started when the shop owner refused to sell cigarettes to the pupils.

OWNERS of a wholesaler in Marburg were allegedly assaulted when pupils from a nearby high school stormed into the shop yesterday (Thursday).

“It is alleged by the complainant that two boys in school uniform went to the shop to buy cigarettes,” said police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

“The shop owner however refused to sell them cigarettes as they are under age. The boys then allegedly swore at him and left.”

The pupils later returned with more school boys and allegedly entered the shop and helped themselves to some items. They also allegedly threw stones at the business which resulted in a door and bakkie being damaged.

A witness described the mayhem as the mob of pupils stormed into the shop. “It was a shocking sighte to see how these pupils behaved. I went and begged the pupils to stop what they were doing because it was totally wrong,” said the witness.

Port Shepstone police have opened charges of theft, assault and malicious damage to property. Investigations are continuing. No arrests have been made.
