Alert Sheppie cops make arrest in Umzinto

Two were arrested and 300 Mandrax tablets were seized in Umzinto.

CONSTABLES Samu Armstrong Ndovela and Bongani Chiliza of the Port Shepstone Tactical Response Team (TRT) arrested two men for dealing in drugs in Umzinto on Tuesday this week.

Azaad Sheik (30) and Iqbal Mohomed Sheik (38) of Gandhinagar Township in Umzinto were arrested for dealing in drugs at at about 11pm. They appeared in the Umzinto Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, and the case was postponed. The accused were released on bail of R1 000 each while the drugs are to be forwarded to the forensic science laboratory for analysis.

“It is alleged that the constables were performing detached duties in the Umzinto area when they observed a white VW Polo driving towards Riverside Park,” said Colonel Jay Naicker.

“The two occupants behaved suspiciously so the policemen pulled them over and searched the vehicle. They found 300 Mandrax tablets in the vehicle and arrested both occupants. The street value of the drugs is estimated to be in the region of twenty one thousand rands,” said Col Naicker.

Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, praised the officers for being alert and arresting the accused.

“These constables have shown that vigilance pays off. I urge them to continue with the good work and clean up our streets and rid our communities of drug peddlers,” she said.

The community of Umzinto can expect more combined drug raids and crime prevention operations in the area by the local police and Port Shepstone TRT.
