Knife-wielding men threaten German visitor

Criminals have targeted beachgoers in Umzumbe and Hibberdene.

THERE were a number of crime related incidents in the northern parts of the South Coast over the weekend. These included:

* A 23-year-old visitor from Germany was walking with  two friends to Umzumbe beach last Saturday  when they saw suspicious-looking men approaching them. Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid, said the men followed them to the main parking area, threatened them with knives and fled with a camera, cash and cell phones.

* A pub in Commercial Drive, Umtentweni was broken into last Saturday night. Liquor was stolen. The robbers gained entry through the roof. No arrests have been made as yet, said Lt-Col Wiid.

* A woman (34) was walking with her mother and two children at Hibberdene main beach when three men approached them last Sunday. Lt-Col Wiid said they were threatened with knives and the men fled with the woman’s cell phone.

Eugene Halliday, founder of AZASOS neighborhood Whatsapp group in Hibberdene, gave these safety tips:

  • Refrain from walking in remote areas
  • Keep doors, garage doors and gates closed.
  • Report anything that seems suspicious. Phone 10111 or the AZASOS Urban Protection team, Mr Halliday at 0714020765 or email azainfo91@gmail.com

“Remember prevention is better than tears,” said Mr Halliday.
