Submerged in a ‘mud flood’

An Olso Beach household woke up to a 'nightmare' ordeal.

A burst water pipe left a trail of destruction at a home on Seaward Lane in Oslo Beach.

The pipe burst during the early hours of Tuesday morning last week, causing a bank to collapse and the property to be flooded with mud and water.

The family’s two vehicles parked in the double garage were submerged in tonnes of thick mud, and nobody in the household could get to work.

A burst pipe sent a deluge of mud and water through the home of Oslo Beach resident Abdulrazack Ismail.

Abdulrazack Ismail and his family were lucky they weren’t harmed in this unforeseen incident.

“I thank God, as it could have been far worse,” said Ismail, who had heard a pipe had burst when he got up to pray at 01:00.

Ismail said he had to continue with his prayers, and later, went outside to discover the shocking devastation caused by the burst pipe.

He called Lazer 911, and Officer Schalk van Jaarsveld arrived and immediately took a spade and began assisting in clearing and redirecting the water and mud away from the house.

Ismail said if it wasn’t for Schalk’s quick thinking and help, the water could have flooded his home.

“I am grateful to Lazer 911 for their help,” he said.

Lazer 911 control centre contacted Ugu Municipality, informing them of the incident and the damage.

Ugu spokesperson France Zama said their team was immediately dispatched to address the issue, successfully mitigating excessive damage from the break.

“Following the incident, the area superintendent, in collaboration with Ugu, conducted an on-site visit to assess the required tools and equipment for clean-up operations. Plans have already been set in motion for a thorough clean-up of the affected area,” confirmed Zama.

Officer Schalk van Jaarsveld from Lazer 911 has been praised for his help.
