Baby duiker caught in sugar cane fire

Great lengths were taken to save the life of the grey duiker.

A beautiful juvenile grey duiker is now on the road to recovery after it was rescued from a sugar cane fire in Port Shepstone.

Tanya Nadauld of Umtentweni luckily found her and took her to Port Shepstone Veterinary Hospital, where the team from the Centre for Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) quickly stepped in to bring her to their centre in Yellowwood Park in Durban.

Once the little duiker arrived at CROW, and on examination, the society’s dedicated nurses discovered she had suffered severe burns on her ears, the left side of her face was swollen, and she had puncture wounds on her swollen leg joints.

Her body temperature was alarmingly high at 39.9°C.

Now, she is under the expert care of clinic nurse Zoe Dougall and is making steady progress. His legs are bandaged, which is crucial for her burn recovery.

Nadauld thanked Bulwer Street Vet and CROW for coming all the way to Port Shepstone to collect the injured duiker. She encouraged people to support the centre.

If you would like to help CROW continue to rescue and rehabilitate wildlife, consider joining the CROW Guardians by donating just R50 per month.
