Hawks arrest cell tower battery thief

The Hawks team have been applauded for their good work.

Hawks members from Port Shepstone have swooped down and made another successful arrest.

This time, they have arrested a man (39) for tampering with essential infrastructure.

He appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday last week.

It is alleged that a technician from MTN was doing maintenance on a cell tower in the Pietermaritzburg area when he saw a group of suspicious-looking people on site on February 22, 2023.

Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Sibu Ncane said that when he approached them, they packed up and drove away.

The following day, security companies spotted the vehicle in the Eshowe area. They tried to stop it, but the driver sped off.

They later found the vehicle abandoned on the side of the road with tower batteries, with an estimated street value of R200 000.

The case docket was allocated to the Hawks members from Port Shepstone Serious Organised Crime Investigation to be probed further.

After intensive investigations, an arrest was made.

The KZN Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation Provincial Head, Major General (Dr) Lesetja Senona, welcomed the arrest and applauded the members for the good work.
