Chair The Hope changes lives

An Australian family's passion project is making a difference in the lives of South Coasters.

Thirty-six wheelchairs have been given to the Rotary Club of Port Shepstone for needy children and adults.

Most recently, 500 wheelchairs arrived in South Africa, donated by an Australian family-run non-profit organisation called Chair The Hope.

At a handover meeting, Dr Kanaya Maharaj thanked Rotary President Dick Basday for helping to transport the wheelchairs from Durban to the coast.

The wheelchairs will be distributed to organisations such as Siyakwazi and the Association for the Physically Challenged, as well as certain needy individuals and families in the community.

Chair The Hope has been run for the past six years by Nathan and Heather Odgen.

Nathan’s snow-skiing accident 22 years ago left him a quadriplegic and in a wheelchair for life, giving the couple first-hand insight into the challenges of limited mobility.

However, they have learnt the importance of cherishing life’s amazing moments and finding joy in everyday experiences.

Embracing life and uplifting others whenever possible, Chair the Hope is their passion project.
