‘Solid’ challenge for Bombay coming up

The league has produced some entertaining cricket.

The penultimate round of the T20 Winter Cricket League took place at Port Shepstone Country Club last Sunday.

The opening game proved to be a thriller, ending in a low-scoring tie between the Super Giants and Solid XI.

Super Giants batted first and could only manage 83 all out in 19 overs.

The Giants looked to have the game wrapped up when Solid was 69-9.

However, the tenth wicket stand was decent, and Solid could have won, but the last man was out in the 15th over with the scores level.

Spinners Jayden Scholtz and André Ellapen took four wickets apiece, with André snagging the last one.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t quite enough for the Giants, and they have been eliminated from the playoffs on nett run rate.

The late game saw Knockouts beat Misfits by three wickets, with nearly seven overs to spare.

Misfits batted first and made 134-6 in 20 overs. In reply, Knockouts made 135-7 in 13.1 overs, with Yacoob 41 not out and Abdullah (31) among the runs.

Misfits are also out, having lost all their games.

The previous weekend, Super Giants beat Knockout by three runs.

The Giants batted first and made 156-7 in 20 overs. Leading run scorers were Mikyle Bartle 46 and Jayden Scholtz, with Hamza Dhudat taking 3-25.

In reply, Knockout fell just short, finishing on 153-8 in 20 overs. Yasin Gangat made 49.

In the second game, Bombay defeated Spartans by three wickets.

Spartans batted first and made 186-2 in 20 overs.

Bombay cut loose, cracking 187-3 in 17.3 overs to win quite comfortably in the end. Zakaria (57) and Salim (72) feasted on some loose bowling.

The final round is to be played today, where Solid XI play Bombay and Misfits play Spartans.

Spartans should win easily enough, meaning the game between Bombay and Solid is a virtual semi-final.

The top two teams progress directly to the final, with teams finishing third and fourth, playing for the bronze.

Bombay 16 (0.82)
Solid XI 14 (0.71)
