NSRI makes a difference via training day

Twenty-eight students had some fun training activities planned out by the NSRI team at Shelly Beach.

As an emergency rescue service operating in South African waters, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) volunteer crew is required to achieve, master and maintain a wide range of skills to perform their lifesaving work in diverse scenarios.

Volunteers at the NSRI Shelly Beach base hosted a post-graduate training day for students at the Shelly Beach Ski-Boat base last Saturday.

Twenty-eight students had some fun training activities.

Students were shown how to strap a patient on a spinal board.

A volunteer at NSRI Shelly Beach, Christo van Rooyen, said it was a day full of activities, and everyone enjoyed it.

“We showed the students what we do as volunteers and the difficult situations we sometimes go through. The students started off with a swim in the ocean, followed by assisting a patient on the beach while some crawled under a net. The day ended with tug of war to bring some smiles and laughter to all,” said Christo.
