TAXI STRIKE: Protest action erupts in certain areas on KZN South Coast [WATCH]
The road between Port Edward and Margate is now blocked. It's been advised to stay off the roads.
It’s been an early start for police, security personnel and emergency services on the KZN South Coast.
Protestors have taken to blocking certain roads by using tyres and debris.
Protests have sprouted up in various places, with the N2 blocked at Bhoboyi and Murchison.
Roads have also been blocked in Izingolweni and Gamalakhe.
The R61 has been blocked by trucks near the Glenmore Caltex on the way to Port Edward.
Simon April, spokesman of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality (RNM), said the taxi strike, now in its second day, is allegedly as a result of the dissatisfaction by taxi owners and operators by what they termed ‘being targeted’ by Operation Shanela, the KZN Department of Transport Public Transport Enforcement Unit.
“The discontent is aggravated by the allegations that taxis are impounded by Shanela due to them not having permits even though applications have been submitted but are held up or delayed by the same department and the municipality.”
RNM welcomes the convening of an urgent meeting by the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, in an attempt to reach an amicable solution to issues that led to the strike by taxis within the area of RNM, extending to other areas within the Ugu District.
