OPINION: Our vastly unbalanced society

"Pity that my ordinary fellow South Africans, after the blush of voting day - are just where they were before the elections."

I wonder how dedicated our new cabinet members will be to the people of this country.

These are the cabinet members who, before they have even proven their worth, were presented with a 2,5 percent increase to their overinflated salaries while our older fellow South Africans will get an extra R10 on their monthly Sassa grant.

Dear cabinet ministers and MECs, how do you sleep at night?

When you attend your official meetings and kgotlas and tuck into the scrumptious snacks at tea break or steaks and seafood at lunch, do you spare a thought for the barefoot Grade 1 learner who walked 5km to school on an empty stomach because the parents are unemployed and have no spare cash for food?

Similarly, at night, after a decent and tasty supper, bath or shower, you fall into your cosy bed.

Do you think of that same child, who had a school meal at least, and now walked 5km home?

He did homework and then fetched water for a wash from a water tanker or communal tank because the pipes carrying water to his home are dry.

Does he have a cosy bed with clean sheets? Probably not. Maybe just a mattress on the floor and a grey blanket. How do you sleep at night, cabinet ministers and MECs?

Pity that my ordinary fellow South Africans, after the blush of voting day – are just where they were before the elections.

Why do we vote? Just a question of same old, same old!

Batho Pele? Where, please, where?
