OPINION: The games politicians play now

"In my opinion, one needs to have the 'feel' for the post, right?"

I watch the machinations that are directly as a result of our country’s political leaning, which is having voted for government figures and special ones appointed by our number one citizen.

My fellow South African, oh, how I despair when I look at who has been appointed to minister a particular portfolio.

Does any thought get applied as to the academic background of that person who is now placed in a specific office?

Surely, I would not pull my very capable garden maintenance man into my kitchen to prepare me a three-course Sunday lunch or place a long-haul truck driver in a primary school to teach the learners.

Does previous experience in a related field not count?

One new minister stated, jokingly, that, in her new post, she does not need to go out and fight physically herself, just as she did not have to physically go out to teach – she was purely an administrator.

Please note, although I think she is a super person, do not let her make any major military strategic decisions.

In my opinion, one needs to have the ‘feel’ for the post, right?

Watching the acceptances of their positions by the summoned incumbents brought to mind a song by Joe South (with my apologies).

“The games politicians play now, every night and every day now. Never saying what they mean, never meaning what they say. While they wile away the hours in their ivory towers, till they are covered up with flowers, in the back of a black limousine.”

In my estimation, politicians are a necessary evil.

Look at any country in the world, and the ethos that is purveyed is that they will use the proletariat to get the position of power purely posed on promises – only to renege once they get the corner office.

Where is Batho Pele, then?
