Gold medals for gymnasts

They have done extremely well considering their lack of competition experience.

Several South Coast gymnasts exceeded their own expectations at the recent Central Zone Gymnastics competition against Free State and Northern Cape.

It was the first time gymnasts from the South Coast Gymnastics Club took part in competitive gymnastics.

“We only wanted to get a feel for competitions, but it led us to a full season of Level 1 competition,” said coach Sigi Engelbrecht.

Five girls qualified at the Ethekwini Qualifiers to go for the KZN selection in Pietermaritzburg.

They were then selected to represent KZN at the Central Zone Festival in Pinetown.

There, they competed against girls from Free State and Northern Cape. Between them, they returned with four gold medals and one silver medal.

Competing in the Level 1 (11 to 12 years) section, Zoe Engelbrecht was third overall in her age group and received gold.

Liya Makongwana also received gold, with Abigail Pretorius close to a gold, but having to settle for silver.

In the Level 1 (9 to 10 years) section, Kunam Gidimisani earned gold and was also in the top three. T’neal Kuhn also received gold.

“It was our first competitive season, which was exciting and a learning curve. Looking forward to many more,” said Sigi.
