Walk our beautiful coast this Sunday

Get ready for the leg three of the challenge from Lucien to Ramsgate on June 9.

Leg two of WIN Walking in Nature Shoreline Challenge was one of the longest of the eight series of walks.

One hundred and ten walkers conquered the wonderful 6.7km walk, which started at Shelly Beach and ended at Lucien Beach.

The route took the group onto the beach sand, over rocky terrain, grassy pathways, and even onto stretches of road at times. The newly blooming aloes dotted the coastline, officially welcoming winter on the KZN South Coast.

It’s this time of year that South Coasters live for!

Volunteers from the Ivungu River Conservancy sold a total of 90 breakfasts.

Taking on the challenge are (from left) Mark and Bev Hutson with Sue Nagel and Carol Mercer.

“The rubbish brought in wasn’t nearly as much as the last week, and we can thank Tidy Towns Shelly Beach to Margate for their ongoing efforts,” said Mzimkhulu Honorary Officer Maxine Willemse.

Willemse said an 80-year-old completed the walk in a good time of three hours and was assisted by Bok and Suzette van der Berg along the way.

Get ready for leg three of the challenge from Lucien to Ramsgate this Sunday, June 9. The distance will be 5.5km.

The Ramsgate Conservancy will do the breakfast/brunch for R40.

The Shoreline Challenge is an annual South Coast community event organised by the Mzimkhulu Honorary Officers.

The challenge is to walk from Port Shepstone to Port Edward along the beach (for most of the way).

It is broken down into eight different walks of between five to seven kilometres, held on a Sunday, over the course of four months from May to August.

The officers are now selling peaks, wide-brim hats and buffs for the colder mornings, which can be ordered from Maxine or bought at each walk.

For bookings, questions, or food orders, contact Maxine on 071 5176408.
