Housebreaker sentenced

The crimes where committed in Umtentweni and Southport.

A housebreaker, Simphiwe Mchunu (28), was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment in the Port Shepstone Regional Court last Wednesday.

He was also deemed unfit to possess a firearm.

According to police, Mchunu from Louisiana had targeted the communities of Umtentweni and Southport. He was sentenced on seven counts of house robbery, housebreaking, attempted housebreaking and theft.

He was arrested in June last year and remained in custody throughout his trial.

The cases were investigated by Detective Sergeant Morne Jones of the Port Shepstone Detective Service.

Ugu District Detective Commander Brigadier Bongani Sibiya is satisfied with the sentence which he hopes will serve as a warning to persons, especially those involved in property crimes.

In another case, Xolisani Niki Mkhize (31) was sentenced in the Scottburgh Regional Court to 15 years imprisonment for aggravated robbery.

He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm. He robbed a tavern owner at gunpoint in Dumisa location on May 21, 2021, taking cash, alcohol and cigarettes.

Investigations led by Detective Sergeant Mandisii Mkhize of Sawoti Detective Service ensured Mkhize’s arrest three days after the incident.

He was denied bail and detained throughout his trial.
