Time to reset for Southern KZN

SCH Local News | The new season will start in September where exciting opportunities await.

It’s been a slightly disappointing season for the Southern KZN cricket team, despite some exciting play at times.

They had hoped to win the KZN Promotion league but suffered two losses which hurt their chances, so will need to reset and try again next season.

In a show of their quality, they recently beat Topham in a 30 over game at Port Shepstone CC and have secured second spot on the log, with one possible game in hand, but it’s some distance behind winners Hillary Malvern.
The hosts batted first and made 158-8.

Cody Mortimer, who has been their star player all season, top-scored with 51 off 37 balls.
It’s worth noting that he was selected for a team of the tournament at the Rural CSA Inland Week held in Bloemfontein in February.

He impressed with his fast bowling and hard-hitting batting.
But back to the game against Topham, Ashley Lombard got the team off to a decent start, in his usual, not-so-cautious fashion – slamming three sixes and a four before being bowled for 39.

Off-spinner Gershion Lawrence had a rare outing at the top of the order, but it was a short one, and he was dismissed for five.

Promising prospect Joe Currie, currently in Grade 11 at Maritzburg College, was looking good before getting out for 11.
This brought Cody to the wicket.

Jayden Scholtz, who has scored some triple-figure scores this season, was out for a duck. Not often this happens.
Next to go was Brinley de Bruin for nine. Liam Scholtz made three, but Mikyle Bartle played a vital cameo, with 23 not out off 25.

In response Topham made 146 all out in 25.2 overs, falling only 12 runs short and with plenty balls still available.
Gershion produced the goods with the ball again, his spinners proving to be very difficult to get away from.
He took 4-25 in his six overs, backed up by Blake Statt with 2-24 in six.
Others to pick up wickets were Cody (1-26), Uminathi Mdeleko (1-14), Liam (1-19) and Jayden (1-35).
There is a FA Cup style knockout tournament in two weeks’ time in Durban for two weeks.

The new season will start in September where exciting opportunities await.
