Tidy Towns: 100% community work

The D440 is now a pleasure to drive on, thanks to Tidy Towns.

Tidy Towns has done it again.
This time, it has miraculously transformed the notorious stretch of road from Creston College to Skogheim, the D440.

It must be added that this project was done in record time by a handful of hardworking volunteers from the local community residing on the D440 including farmers, businesses and Tidy Towns Shelly Beach to Margate.

Before: The D440 before the upgrade.

Scott Kvaslvig of Tidy Towns Shelly Beach to Margate said they worked closely with government roleplayers with the support of private businesses to make this happen.

He thanked Ray Nkonyeni Municipality councillors Xolani Gasa of Ward 20 and Paul Brauteseth of Ward 3 for their roles in arranging the gravel and tar, and Bongani Zulu from the Department of Transport for his valued and continued support.

Kvalsvig said the four kilometre stretch of busy road has been troublesome for some time.

“The neglected road was littered with potholes and so dangerous to drive on,” he said.

He explained that this road is a busy one, especially as it is being used as a shortcut while Marine Drive is being rehabilitated.

The Tidy Towns team always has a list of projects up their sleeves.

Another show-off landscaping piece that is turning heads is the roadside garden at the intersection in Shelly Beach. The team has spent many hours cleaning up this large section of verge, even removing the litter from the nearby stream.
