Rain spoils semi-final chance for Challengers

It was a wonderful learning experience for the young cricketers.

There was certainly the feeling of a missed opportunity as wet weather had the final say at the Glenwood U13 Cricket Festival, held in Durban last week Friday and Saturday.

The festival has been named in honour of Protea cricketer, Andile Phehlukwayo. He is an old boy of Glenwood High, having previously attended Margate Primary.

The Robbie Coutts Cricket Academy/Port Shepstone CC sent two teams to compete – the RC Challengers and RC Rangers.

Ruben van Reenen led the way for the Challengers as captain and top-scoring batsman. He made scores of 32, 53 and 91 as they won three games in a row, beating Durban North College, Mtunzini and Grantham Park.

Ruben van Reenen made 91 off 26 balls against Grantham.

Jacob Steynberg had a good tournament, with two wickets for just 17 runs in three matches and 20 not out in the one innings in which he batted.

Jacques de Bruin was the top bowler, taking 5-9 against Grantham Park, and six wickets overall for 23 runs.
Karlo Jacobs was consistent all round, making 23 runs in two innings and taking three wickets for 18 runs.

They almost qualified for the semi-finals on Saturday but rain in the late afternoon on Friday saw matches abandoned, although the Challengers did complete a rejigged T10 game. The result was that they lost out on nett run rate to Manor Gardens.

The Rangers, captained by Elijah Langton and formed almost entirely of Grade 6 boys, lost all four of their games.
They were competitive and could have won at least two had it not been for all the wides they bowled.

This is definitely an area to work on as is running between wickets when singles are easily available.
Elijah was their top performer with both bat and ball. He made scores of 9, 19*, 40* and 0. His bowling was good as well, taking 4-32 overall.

Challengers: Jacques de Bruin, Reuben de Bruin, Karlo Jacobs, Jayden Derksen, Sphephelo Mlambo, Khulu Mlondo, Christiaan Otto, Ruan Smit, Oliver Smith, Jacob Steynberg, Ruben van Reenen (c).
Rangers: Damion Bezuidenhout, Kaleb de Beer, Matthew Evans, Stiaan Fritz, Jaydon Koekemoer, Benjamin Kunz, Elijah Langton (c), Orlando Lombard, Daniel Rush, Francois Smith, Bertu van Reenen.
