Umdoni strives to improve service delivery

There have been quite a few achievements made by the current council to date.

With just over 24 months in office, Umdoni Municipality‘s councillors serving in the 2021-2026 term have made notable advances in the provision of key service delivery projects.

“A strict oversight role on community development projects has led to the accomplishment of positive results, including implementation, monitoring and completion of projects without any compromises on standards and quality of work,” said Sphelele Cele, Umdoni communications manager.

This new year marks the second year of the implementation of the municipality’s fourth generation Integrated Development Plan.

Roads:
Mthobisi Mbutho Road was upgraded from gravel to asphalt in Ward 17 and completed in the 2022/23 financial year; upgrading of steep hills from gravel to concrete in various rural wards; re-gravelling of 49.5km of rural roads; rehabilitation of Textile Road and Hazelwood Road in Ward 13; re-gravelling of Langa Road in Ward 11; re-gravelling of Myeza Road in Ward 14; the upgrading of Smolo Road from gravel to asphalt in Ward 9 and the construction of Gumede Bridge in Ward 16, also completed in the 2022/23 fiscal year.
“The municipality is aware that is it currently faced with a backlog of pothole patching and commits to repairs in the shortest possible period,” added Cele.

Community halls:
The construction of Dlangezwa Community Hall in Ward 18 was completed in 2022/23, as well as Mayfield Community Hall in Ward 5.

Sports fields:
Constructed and completed Bhadane Sport Field in Ward 4, Nkampula Sport Field in Ward 3 and KwaLembe Sport Field in Ward 1. The upgrading of Umzinto Sport Field and Kwampodo Sport Field are currently at 91% completion rate.

Urban precinct maintenance and upgrades:
Maintenance of streetlights; refurbishment of Scottburgh Crafters Market; upgrading of Umzinto Bus Rank and rehabilitation and pothole patching of urban roads.

With regards to housing, RDP houses were constructed in Vulamehlo, Amandawe and Malangeni.
In terms of job opportunities, employment was created through the Expanded Public Works Programme.

“The municipality remains resolute that service delivery targets which include the development of road infrastructure in the rural and urban domains, housing, electricity and refuse services among other core mandated services are achieved by the end of the term of office,” added Cele.
