“Ugu District placed first in the province for four consecutive years, but bagged 89% and landed in second place last year. However, schools in Umzumbe were placed first in terms of performance,” said Umzumbe’s mayor Bongani Nyuswa.

“We encourage commitment to education as a weapon to move forward for a bright future. It is a joy for us when our children are determined and get good results, especially since most of our schools are in rural areas. The work of our teachers in collaboration with parents is visible, we express our gratitude because doing well for children means the development of families and Umzumbe,” he added.

The safety of pupils was also discussed.
Nyuswa explained that the municipality held four sessions with three police stations, to find ways to tackle crime, especially during the winter months.

He urged parents and the public to accompany children to and from school to ensure their safety.
Second placed Ntokozo Ngibe shared the same sentiments as the mayor when it came to safety during the exams.

The achiever told Fever that although she had lived at school, there were still concerns over the safety of pupils who walked to and from school everyday.
Ngibe said after receiving seven distinctions, she will be studying medicine at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
