ChiChi La Lady is in her element as a DJ

"The great love I have for music is my biggest inspiration!"

Well-known on the DJ decks as ChiChi La Lady, Nonceba Mgungwana is one of few women, in this particular field, on the South Coast.
Her love for deejaying was inspired by a keen ear for music.

“I love music and listened to everything that sounded good. During chill sessions with friends, I insisted on playing for them, like any DJ. I decided to pursue my love for music in 2022 and I approached DJ 101 to mentor me,” said Mgungwana.

Every DJ has a chosen genre, and for Mgungwana, it’s Amapiano, a hybrid of deep house, jazz and lounge music characterised by synths and wide percussive basslines.

“I chose to play Amapiano, both private school and commercial. I enjoy playing private school, it’s my comfort zone because it’s chilled, melodic sounds and it’s good music,” she added.
Although she has not been a DJ for long, Mgungwana has had many opportunities locally and in Durban.

“My highlights are playing at my resident club, Level 101 in Margate, Platinum Belt Lounge in Umhlanga, Ugu Youth Radio, Cappellos South Coast, News Cafe, LIV Durban, and Brown Sugar. Getting recognition in this male-dominated industry is the biggest highlight of all,” she emphasised.

She looks up to other women DJs such as Durban Gogo. “She has made her mark and has worked hard to be where she is right now. I have so much respect for her and her craft. I have been on the same stage with Kabza the Small, Dlala Thukzin, Mobi Dixon, DJ Tira, DJ Merlon, KO, Dladla Mshunqisi, Nkosazana Daughter, and others. The experience has been phenomenal,” Mgungwana said.

Having a 9 to 5 job has not negatively impacted her deejaying as she only pursues it on weekends.
Mgungwana was born and raised in Verulam, and after graduating from the Durban University of Technology, she moved to Port Shepstone to pursue her formal career.
