Six babies, four boys and two girls were welcomed at Port Shepstone Regional Hospital on Christmas and New Year’s day.

Morai said the second baby was delivered at 7pm weighing in at 1,805 kg.

She said on January 1, the first baby was delivered at 10.45am weighing 3.950 kg.

“The second baby born on January 1 was delivered at 1.45pm. The third baby was delivered via caesarean section at 1pm weighing 2.250 kg. The last baby born on this day was delivered at 8pm weighing 2.390kg,” said Morai.

She added that the babies were celebrated in the hospital’s maternity wards by both nurses and doctors.
Excited to be a mother, Khethiwe Khowa who gave birth on December 25, said she was very happy to have given birth on such as special day, saying that she was grateful for the gift she received.

Also, Nokwazi Mchithwa from Bizana said she was happy that her child was the first to be delivered at the hospital in the new year.

She said as a first-time mother, she had limited knowledge about raising a child, saying that the lessons they received on how to hold, breastfeed and bath a baby will help her when she is alone at home.

The operational manager of the hospital’s labour ward, Sister Zimasa Mthulu said being born on either of these days makes one feel special, saying that they wish the new mothers all the best in raising their children.
She said the mothers were educated on the availability of family planning services to prevent unwanted pregnancies.

She added that new mothers also received information on the benefits of breastfeeding and the importance of immunisation.

“Mothers must be aware of the long-term reversible contraception methods for family planning and they must visit their local clinics to get more information,” she said.

Khethiwe Khowa was the first mother to give birth to a baby girl at Port Shepstone Regional Hospital on Christmas day.
