Retro surf contest such a vibe

All-in-all, it was a day of great food, sport and music.

The 2023 Tweni2’s Summer Festival of surf, sport and music has been described as ‘such a vibe’!

Peter and Lindy Horlock with the help of Andrew ‘Roosta’ Lange hosted the annual festival at The Spot Backpackers in Tweni last month.

The day started with dedicated retro surfers offering a free learn-to-surf clinic to encourage a new generation of surf lovers.

Lindy said this was followed by an exciting beach soccer tournament building up the beach vibe for the surfers of the inaugural Retro 5000 by paying tribute to the styles and surfboards of the past.

Talented singer-songwriter Tyran Roy, and his guitar.

Andrew reported that with the slides in play and the waves waving, Gary Holmes, of Holmes brothers fame, put on a clinical show of his trademark style to take the honours, with Nick Njapha claiming best turn and new favourite commentator, young Fin McKenzie claiming a set of sponsored Maisch fins, for being the biggest grom.

Best dressed prizes were awarded to Retro’s Hayley Maisch and Andrew with Cathy de Boer winning the ‘Beer-for-a-year’ early bird prize.

“The real winners were the surfboards all pre-dating the 1990s. Surfers were encouraged to ride two different craft to challenge their all-round versatility and styles, which led to some very entertaining surfing,” said Andrew.

And then…the music started with a great line-up of artists which saw revellers rocking until the wee hours.
