The Tidy Towns Shelly Beach to Margate has managed to complete a long list of successful projects in 2023.

What a year 2023 has been for the team from Tidy Towns Shelly Beach!

A round of applause to the team who has voluntarily worked hard to put the South Coast on the map.

The efforts the team have put into making Tidy Towns Shelly Beach to Margate a beautiful and welcoming destination for tourists is starting to bear fruit.

Stephen Herbst of Tidy Towns said the community has had only one focus, and that is tourism. “We all want to see our local businesses thrive and our entire community to benefit from the influx of visitors.”

The team was proudly awarded two trophies – the Barry Wolins Memorial Trophy at the South African Surfing Championships, and the trophy for being the overall district Ugu Surfriders team champions at the KZN Surfing Championships.

Both these top surfing events which received rave reviews were hosted by the Tidy Towns Shelly Beach to Margate team at world-class St Michaels beach.

Looking back on the year that’s been, here are some of the projects the team has tackled:
The revamp of Margate Joint Operation Centre toilets, clean-up and maintenance of the Margate pier toilets, paving of the ramp outside Margate Wimpy, Lucien Beach building upgrade, Manaba Beach tidal pool repair phase one.

The incredible clean-up of the foliage around Uvongo’s rock escarpments and waterfall, the spruce up of Margate intersection and the upkept of Uvongo Park Run route.

Repeated successful beach clean-ups, along with major beach clean-ups due to extreme high tides and storm surges.

Then the establishment of Tidy Towns Buffalo City and Tidy Towns Port Edward and the Tidy Towns Shelly Beach Biz Hub.

Most recently, the team has tackled the Shelly Beach business hub (by trench filling) and the Shelly Beach intersection project which entailed a major clean out of the stream and storm water areas.

For 2024, Herbst said the main goal is to upgrade the Margate promenade, along with a maintenance revamp of the lifeguard tower and other buildings and infrastructure that is looking tatty and neglected.

Reg Horne thanks Ray Nkonyeni Municipality and Law Enforcement for their continued assistance.

“Let’s not forget that ‘tourism, tourism and tourism’ is the lifeline to keep the South Coast alive and ticking,” he said.
