OPINION: Traffic light trauma begs questions

When will they be fixed? How many more people need to get injured?

Non-functioning traffic lights in Marburg pose a threat to motorists and especially pedestrians.

On November 6 this year a pedestrian was struck down by a car and hospitalised while trying to cross at the pedestrian traffic light.

I have previously and frequently reported the following traffic lights in Marburg that are not functioning:
1. Intersection at Marburg KFC.

2. Pedestrian crossing between Marburg KFC intersection and Marburg Secondary intersection, which has not been working for several months.

3. Lind Road intersection at Ugu.
These traffic lights have not been functional for a long time. When will they be fixed? How many more people need to get injured?

RESPONSE FROM RAY NKONYENI MUNICIPALITY
We have experienced some challenges with traffic lights at the following intersections: corner Lind road and Harding road, pedestrian crossing on Harding road and at Marburg KFC, due to traffic light controller units faults, as well as cable faults in the installation.

We have since managed to repair the Lind Road traffic lights and Marburg KFC traffic lights.
The outstanding traffic lights to be repaired is the pedestrian crossing in Marburg.
The challenge is that the controller unit for the pedestrian traffic light was found to be faulty.
We have since placed an order for a new pedestrian crossing traffic light controller and are still waiting for its delivery.

We request all road users, both drivers and pedestrians to be cautious when using the said road.
