The Pietermaritzburg High Court recently sentenced Songezo Mpulampula (21) to life in prison for raping and killing a four-year-old boy in Harding in September.According to the police, the boy’s lifeless body was found dumped in a toilet.

Police spokesperson Captain Adam Francis said Harding detectives began following up on information and assisted the lead detective, Sergeant Musa Mbanjwa, in finding the killer.

He said investigations led the team to Umzimkhulu where Mpulampula had fled to.
Francis added that Mpulampula was arrested, with the assistance of Umzimkhulu Detective Service, on charges of rape and murder.

He appeared in the Pietermaritzburg High Court for sentencing on November 27.

“Mpulampula was handed down a life sentence on each charge. The sentences are to run concurrently and he was declared unfit to possess a firearm,” said Francis.

“The harsh sentence sends a strong message that the law is uncompromising with regard to crimes, especially those affecting women and children. Saps remains committed to ensuring that thorough investigations by well-drained detectives will result in the maximum penalty for lawbreakers.”
