Tinman win for Darryn Purtell
The conditions were perfect, the sea was flat and there was very little wind.
Darryn Purtell has rounded off his season with a win at the Tinman held in Durban recently.
He explained how the format of the race has changed this year.
“To ensure that we will more than likely have a swim they have moved the swim start from Sun Coast to Ushaka beach. The conditions there are a lot more predictable and water quality is better, however the rest of the race and registration happens at Suncoast,” he said.
So, now they do a 1km swim, then 3.5km run, followed by 30km ride and then a 6.5km run to finish off.
The conditions were perfect, the sea was flat and there was very little wind.
“The swim went well, Wesley Gilcrest led the swim from the start and into T1, myself and Ernest Phungula came into T1 a few seconds off. We managed to run Wesley down and four of us came into transition pretty close together,” he explained.
And then they headed out on the bike.
“Wesley and I worked pretty well on the bike and quickly built a lead on the rest of the field. We came into last transition together and it came down to the run,” he said.
“We ran the first lap together and then I managed to open a gap on the second and ran it home to take the win.”
Darryn said it was a great day and thanked the B-Active team for putting on another fantastic Tinman to end of the 2023 series.
