Taking a stand against women and child abuse

Dangalazi Ngcobo was allegedly killed by her nephew who suspected her of witchcraft.

The ANC Women’s League in the Tolomani Myayiza Region took to the streets of Mtwalume recently.

They held a peaceful march from Makhoso to Bangibizo where they held a prayer session.
Regional co-ordinator of the league, Nsiki Fica said they marched against the abuse of women and children in Mtwalume.

“We know that this area has become a hotspot for the killing and kidnapping of children and women.”
She said their mission is to create awareness, as recently Sinethemba Ngcece Sibiya (8) went missing outside her school and was later found dead near a river.

“It is very important for us women to take care of our children and ourselves. Losing a child in that manner makes us realise that there has been more than enough killings happening in our area.”

Another recent incident was that of Dangalazi Ngcobo who was allegedly killed by her nephew who suspected her of witchcraft.

Fica also mentioned other cases that they will be attending in Port Shepstone Court, to support the families of victims.

Nomvume Ndelu from Umzumbe said a lot of horrible things have happened to their children and women.

“We are marching today because we are trying to beg whoever is doing this to stop, we have had enough. When a woman is killed, it means a nation is being killed.”

Reverend Bheki Singane of the Zulu Congregation Church said the people who do this make it difficult for them to preach and convince victims or the family of victims about the word of God because of what they have been through.

He mentioned that the relationship between the community and the police is not where it should be because most of the time the police fail the people.

“Victims do not get immediate help from the police because some incidents require the police to attend a scene immediately, but we do not get that kind of response.”

Singane said they will not give up the fight as church leaders and community members.
