Tweni beach gets a facelift

This project has not only brought memories for Rhona Botha, but has also brought the community together, and brightened up the beach.

Tweni Tidy Towns volunteers have been hard at work, adding mosaics to the bins, tables and benches on Tweni beach.

Giving the community and family-centred beach a facelift has always been a dream for Rhona Botha, a resident who wanted to do something special in memory of her late husband, Joel Botha.

Mishack Lushaba and Willaim Mkhungo have been so helpful with the upliftment project.

Botha said for years she and her family spent time at the beach and her husband always sat on the same bench as they shared ice-cream and took photos.

This project has not only brought memories for Botha, but has also brought the community together, and brightened up the beach.

The different mosaics tell stories of what people enjoy about the beach, be it dolphin watching, swimming or enjoying the Sardine Run.

Selvan Chetty, also a member of Tweni Tidy Towns said the initiative of beautifying the beach has always been done jointly with Ray Nkonyeni Municipality over the years, however, this year saw many residents show interest in becoming part of the initiative.

Leila Edwards and Rhona Botha show off the results of a renovated bench.

Chetty said most of the material used for the mosaics has been donated by Tweni businesses and individuals who share the same vision.

He thanks everyone who has contributed to the project.

Leila Edwards said currently seven bins have been completed; benches, tables and the log fencing have also been painted by various community members with the help of Botha who hosts mosaic classes every Tuesday morning at her house.

“As Tweni ratepayers, we have been lobbying for Blue Flag Beach status for many years and with this upliftment project, Tweni Tidy Towns believes it will turn into reality. We still have more to do as the kiosk still needs some work after the recent storms which resulted in the outside ceiling collapsing,” said Edwards.

She said the lifesavers clubhouse also needs to be moved closer to the kiosk so that they can get a better view of the entire beach.

Volunteers are welcome to join in for the mosaic classes.

“We are also appealing for more paint donations as we want to paint the steps in rainbow colours. We also call on retired builders and handymen to come and assist, if we all work together we can bring back the beauty of our beach,” said Edwards.

BEFORE: A bench is in a terrible state.

She said anyone wishing to donate or find out more should contact her on 082 3761853.
